The Current War Movie Launching In Theaters

OCT 16, 2019

It’s the late 1800’s, and America is beginning to dabble in the science of electricity. As more people travel into the US, the population centers grow. Cities start requiring more than just kerosene lamps.

The Current War Movie follows the true story of a rivalry of three brilliant innovators. George Westinghouse, Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla compete to power the 1893 World’s Fair, in an epic feud that literally electrified the modern world.

On the eve of May 1, 1893, the Chicago’s World Fair celebration honors the 400th anniversary and legacy of Columbus’ first voyage to the United States. Edison and Westinghouse’s first battle ignites. The fair will be better known as the cutting edge in new electrical technology. The 101 Studios film The Current War makes this American history come to life.

Benedict Cumberbatch as Thomas Edison is the celebrity inventor on the verge of launching DC electric current, but his plans are disrupted by his competition: Michael Shannon playing the businessman George Westinghouse. The grapple between Edison and Westinghouse for who will power the nation sparks one of the first and greatest feuds in American history which fuels the future corporate titans of the industrial revolution and onward.

Westinghouse partners with genius Nikolai Tesla, played by Nicholas Hoult. They collaborate and come up with a superior idea for how to rapidly electrify the United States: AC current. Westinghouse ultimately beats Thomas Edison for the contract to light the World’s Fair with AC power and wins the “War of the Currents.”

Of the three inventors, George Westinghouse is responsible for the introduction and development of the alternating current for light and power that we know today. His entrepreneurial spirit is what inspires him to turn his ideas into enterprises. In 1886, he created Westinghouse Electric. Over his lifetime, George Westinghouse founded 60 companies, and received more than 360 patents for his work.
